Volkswagen In-Car AI Integrates ChatGPT for Enhanced Voice Assistance

Volkswagen has announced the rollout of its enhanced in-car AI voice assistant, IDA, which integrates ChatGPT along with several cloud-based models to provide drivers with improved responses. The new feature will first be available in the 2025 Jetta, Jetta GLI, and the 82kWh battery version of the 2024 ID.4, with other models following later this year.

AI Voice Assistance Across VW Models

Volkswagen drivers will need to subscribe to the company’s Plus Speech with AI service to access the ChatGPT integration. Starting in 2025, most VW models, including the ID.4 and ID Buzz, will receive the feature free for three years. Other models, like the GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan, will offer it free for one year, while Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Taos owners will need to subscribe independently. Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport owners will have to wait until 2026 for ChatGPT integration.

Cloud-Based and Locally Processed Responses

While VW’s IDA voice assistant can handle simple commands like adjusting temperature settings locally, more complex requests will be sent to the cloud. For instance, asking for restaurant recommendations or for the assistant to tell you a story will trigger a cloud-based response through ChatGPT and other AI models, provided by Cerence, a leading automotive chatbot company.

ChatGPT Integration at CES Announcement

Volkswagen initially revealed its plan to integrate ChatGPT into its in-car AI assistant during CES in January. Now, with the official rollout starting, drivers will be able to experience the new voice assistant technology, which seamlessly combines local and cloud-based processing to enhance in-car convenience.
