Today’s Headlines:
Experience Google AI in even more ways on Android - By building AI right into the Android operating system, we're reimagining how you can interact with your phone. With Circle to Search built directly into the user experience, you can search anything you see on your phone using a simple gesture — without having to stop what you’re doing or switch to a different app. Soon, you’ll be able to bring up Gemini's overlay on top of the app you're in to easily use Gemini in more ways. We’re just getting started with how on-device AI can change what your phone can do, and we’ll continue building Google AI into every part of the smartphone experience.
Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down - From ‘AI Overviews’ to automatic categorization, Google is bringing AI to practically every part of the search process. AI Overviews provide a general answer to your query with resource links. Lens now lets you search by capturing a video. A new planning tool generates trip itineraries or meal plans from a single query. An AI-powered feature organizes results pages, showing options like date night or business meeting restaurants without needing to ask.
Google unleashes AI in search, raising hopes for better results and fears about less web traffic - Google rolled out a retooled search engine that will frequently favor responses crafted by artificial intelligence over website links, a shift promising to quicken the quest for information while also potentially disrupting the flow of money-making internet traffic. People will likely still see Google’s traditional website links and ads for simple searches for things like a store recommendation or weather forecasts.
This subtle (but useful) AI feature was my favorite Google I/O 2024 announcement - Finding a photo on your phone can be tougher than a needle in that haystack. Now Google has an AI fix called "Ask Photos". By leveraging Gemini AI, the feature enables users to ask the chatbot to find a photo for them instead of having to look through thousands of photos themselves.
Will Google Listen to your conversations? - A Google security feature that promises to detect and warn users about scam phone calls is facing concerns it could be abused for spying purposes. In a blog post, it says the feature is designed to detect "conversation patterns commonly associated with scams," suggesting Google’s AI model will potentially listen in on all your phone calls — or at least ones it suspects are coming from a fraudster. To protect the user’s privacy, the company says Gemini Nano operates locally, without connecting to the internet. “This protection all happens on-device, so your conversation stays private to you."
ElevenLabs has launched a free iPhone app that speaks text on the screen - ElevenLabs Reader: AI Audio can convert text into natural, expressive speech. ElevenLabs Reader puts our most capable Text to Speech (TTS) model in your pocket. Control reading speed: Speed up or slow down the narrator and listen at whatever speed you like. Works with many types of content: Write text, paste links from the web, upload PDFs or ePubs and have it read aloud. The app is currently available accessible for free download in the App Store.
Hume AI unveiled Chatter - Chatter is an interactive voice AI podcast that uses real-time web search to provide daily news updates for an interactive podcast experience.
US senators unveil AI policy roadmap, seek government funding boost - A bipartisan group of U.S. senators called for a big jump in government research funding of artificial intelligence as they debate new legal safeguards. The senators backed a goal to reach government funding of at least $32 billion a year for non-defense aspects of AI innovation. The sum represented "surge emergency funding to cement America's dominance in AI" including "outcompeting China".
Microsoft highlights a growing AI data problem - Microsoft said that its 2023 emissions were 29.1% above 2020 levels. That's primarily from data center construction and "associated embodied carbon" in building materials and hardware, but said it's boosting efforts to use "greener steel, concrete, and fuels." Microsoft's situation is "one of the first concrete examples of how the pursuit of AI is colliding with efforts to cut emissions". Microsoft is a major renewables buyer and plans to match 100% of its corporate operations with them by 2025 on an aggregate basis. By 2030, it wants to meet its needs with zero-carbon sources 24/7.
Humane says its AI Pins just got a GPT-4o upgrade - Humane’s AI Pin did not live up to the AI gadget hype at launch. Now, the company says things are getting better with the addition of OpenAI’s just-launched GPT-4o AI model, with product design lead George Kedenburg claiming it’s faster now, with better answers.
Nvidia Recently Bought 5 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stocks, and 1 Is Absolutely Soaring - Nvidia filed a 13F with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Feb. 14 revealing new holdings in five different stocks: Arm Holdings, Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Nano-X Imaging, TuSimple Holdings, & SoundHound AI. Despite Arm being Nvidia's largest position, SoundHound AI takes the cake for best performer. It's up 160% in 2024 so far, which means Nvidia has more than doubled its money since buying it in the fourth quarter of last year.
Ampere Computing pairs with Qualcomm on AI, unveils new chip - Ampere Computing said it was pairing its chips with those from Qualcomm in a new offering aimed at lowering the power bills from operating artificial intelligence chips. The joint Ampere-Qualcomm offering will not compete directly against AI chip leader Nvidia, whose chips are used to train AI systems with huge amounts of data. The Ampere-Qualcomm servers are instead meant to run those models efficiently after they are trained.
Scientists use generative AI to answer complex questions in physics - A new technique that can automatically classify phases of physical systems could help scientists investigate new materials. Researchers from MIT and the University of Basel in Switzerland applied generative artificial intelligence models to this problem, developing a new machine-learning framework that can automatically map out phase diagrams for new physical systems.
AI robot 'Sophia' gives commencement speech at a New York university - Sophia, and AI robot, was the featured speaker at last week's commencement ceremony at D'Youville University in Buffalo, New York. She participated in a Q&A session with the Student Government Association president, John Rizk, and gave a "last lecture" before graduation. However, the university's full-time faculty union criticized Sophia's selection, calling it a frivolous expense and misuse of resources. They felt it was disrespectful to hardworking faculty who have been without a fair contract for over two years and were not consulted before the announcement.
Stability AI discusses sale amid cash crunch - Stability AI held discussions with at least one potential buyer in recent weeks about a sale as it faces a cash crunch. In the first quarter of 2024, Stability AI generated less than $5 million in revenue and lost more than $30 million, the report said, adding that the company currently owes close to $100 million in outstanding bills to cloud computing providers and others.
Microsoft offers relocation to hundreds of China-based AI staff amid U.S.-China tech tensions - Relocation has been offered to about 700 to 800 China-based employees working in machine learning and other work related to cloud computing. The move from Microsoft comes as Washington seeks to crack down on Beijing’s access to advanced AI and cloud computing technology.
Apple Shares Are Back to Winning Ways as AI Optimism Builds - After months of struggles, Apple Inc. is looking a lot more like the stock market leader it used to be. The iPhone maker’s shares are on pace for their best month since March 2023. They’ve gained almost 12% after a strong earnings report showed growth is returning and the company also announced the biggest stock buyback in US history, a sign of its financial might.
How AI is disrupting parking - SP Plus operates parking garages, but under its new owner, Metropolis, its 4,000 locations will switch to camera-based systems that recognize individual cars and bill the owners directly. Metropolis allows cars to simply drive in and drive out whenever they want, without needing to install any kind of device. It then bills the owner's credit card automatically.
GrubMarket buys Butter to give its food distribution tech an AI boost - GrubMarket recently acquired Butter, a SaaS platform that digitizes this manual process with AI. Butter's AI features help distributors convert unstructured data into easily viewed, tracked, and analyzed information. It uses third-party and proprietary AI to turn voice notes into order lists for restaurants and supermarkets. Users can review this AI-generated information for accuracy before it enters Butter’s system. With digital information, distributors can analyze sales and optimize inventory and pricing.
‘We’re just scratching the surface’ of crypto and AI — Microsoft exec - Yorke Rhodes, Microsoft’s director for digital transformation, blockchain and cloud supply chain, was asked how the company viewed this possible intersection of technologies. “I do think that as these two technologies progress, you can create agents that bring together the power of both. We’re just scratching the surface,” he said. “But would we [Microsoft] ever build an L1 blockchain? I don’t think so.”
Blockchain ID project Humanity Protocol hits unicorn status with $30M raise - Decentralized identity solution Humanity Protocol is officially a unicorn after a recent $30 million raise lifted its valuation to $1 billion. The project scans user’s palms and claims to secure their digital identities on a blockchain by integrating zero-knowledge technology and “proof-of-humanity” — a consensus mechanism used to confirm the user is human and not an AI bot.
