• OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o Mini - Affordable, High-Performance AI Model - OpenAI introduced its latest small AI model, GPT-4o mini, on Thursday. This new model is designed to be cheaper and faster than OpenAI’s existing cutting-edge AI models. It is available to developers and consumers through the ChatGPT web and mobile app starting today, with enterprise users gaining access next week.

• OpenAI Trains AI to Explain Itself Better - Researchers have developed a training method to make text produced by advanced language models easier to verify and understand. By training strong models to produce text that weaker models can verify, the clarity and legibility of AI-generated text have improved, benefiting human evaluators.

• Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs - A New AI Startup Worth $1 Billion - Fei-Fei Li, a renowned computer scientist often referred to as the “godmother of AI,” has founded a new startup called World Labs. In just four months, the company has achieved a valuation exceeding $1 billion, according to the Financial Times. World Labs is backed by prominent investors Andreessen Horowitz and Radical Ventures.

• Texas Miners Pivot from Bitcoin to AI with New Data Center - Houston-based tech company Lancium and Denver-based Crusoe Energy Systems announced a multibillion-dollar deal to build a 200-megawatt data center near Abilene, Texas. This center is designed to meet the unique needs of AI companies. The project marks the first phase of a larger 1.2-gigawatt build-out. At full capacity, this will be one of the largest AI data center campuses globally.

• Meta Withholds AI Models from EU Over Regulatory Uncertainty - Meta has decided to withhold its upcoming multimodal AI model and future models from customers in the European Union. This decision stems from what Meta describes as a lack of regulatory clarity in the region. However, Meta plans to release a larger, text-only version of its Llama 3 model soon, which will be available to EU customers.

• Trump's Allies Draft AI Executive Order for Military Tech - Allies of former President Donald Trump are reportedly working on an executive order focused on artificial intelligence (AI) that could lead to the development of significant AI military technology projects, similar to the historical "Manhattan Projects." If implemented, the plans could benefit Trump's tech donors, including Tesla billionaire Elon Musk, who endorsed Trump and reportedly plans to donate $45 million to a new super PAC called America PAC, supported by others in Silicon Valley.

• Samsung Acquires UK-Based Knowledge Graph Startup - Samsung announced the acquisition of Oxford Semantic Technologies, a UK-based knowledge graph startup, for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition aims to bolster Samsung’s AI offerings with advanced knowledge graph technology. This technology enhances data processing and reasoning capabilities, leading to improved search results and recommendations.

• TTT Models - The Next Frontier in Generative AI - After years of dominance by transformer-based AI models, researchers are seeking new architectures to overcome technical challenges. Transformers, which underpin models like OpenAI’s Sora, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and GPT-4o, are encountering computation-related roadblocks, particularly in processing vast amounts of data efficiently on standard hardware. This inefficiency is leading to significant increases in power demand, raising concerns about sustainability.

• Proton Scribe AI Assistant - Privacy-Focused and Secure - Proton has launched Proton Scribe, a privacy-protecting AI writing assistant integrated with Proton Mail. This new tool aims to boost productivity while ensuring data privacy. What sets Proton Scribe apart is its unique local AI approach, which processes prompts directly on users' devices instead of sending data to a cloud service. Users also have the option to use Proton's secure "no log" servers.
