Google's New AI-Powered Search Experience
Hello, AiNews.com readers! Today, I'm excited to share with you my thoughts about the groundbreaking updates for Google's new AI-powered search engine experience, which is transforming how we interact with search, and changing how SEO works today.
Key Features:
Circle to Search: This innovative feature allows users to search any content on their screen without leaving the current app. By simply circling, highlighting, or scribbling on images, text, or videos, you can instantly find relevant information. This seamless integration means you can continue your tasks without disruptions, making the search process more intuitive and efficient.
Generative AI Capabilities: Google's new search experience leverages generative AI to provide more contextual and comprehensive answers. When you ask a question, you receive an AI-generated snapshot of key information, which can include follow-up suggestions. This conversational mode allows for a more natural flow of inquiry, enabling users to dive deeper into topics without having to start new searches from scratch.
Multimodal Search: The new AI-driven search experience supports multimodal queries, combining text, images, and even voice inputs. This flexibility means you can search using the method that best suits your current need, whether it’s speaking a question, showing a picture to search, or typing text.
Enhanced Shopping Experience: For those who shop online, the new search experience offers detailed product summaries, including reviews, prices, and availability. This feature is designed to simplify the decision-making process by providing comprehensive information in one place, directly within your search results.
My Thoughts:
These updates are truly exciting and represent a significant leap forward in making search more user-friendly and efficient. The ability to search contextually within any app, receive AI-generated summaries, and engage in a conversational search process is a testament to how AI can enhance our daily tasks. It’s also impressive to see how these features can streamline online shopping, providing all necessary information at a glance.
However, these advancements also bring changes to traditional SEO practices. With AI-generated snapshots and conversational search modes, businesses must adapt their SEO strategies to ensure visibility in these new formats. Traditional keyword optimization will no longer be enough; instead, high-quality, contextually relevant content becomes even more crucial. Ensuring that your content is engaging, informative, and aligned with E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) principles will be key to maintaining a strong presence in search results.
Moreover, optimizing for multimodal queries—considering how images, text, and voice search intersect—will become essential. This shift means businesses need to create versatile content that can be effectively indexed and presented across different search modalities. Keeping up with these changes will require continuous learning and adaptation, but it also offers exciting opportunities to engage users in more dynamic ways.
The new capabilities offer a more interactive and responsive experience. I'm particularly thrilled about the conversational mode and the multimodal search options, as they make interacting with Google Search more dynamic and intuitive.

OpenAI says Sky voice in ChatGPT will be paused after concerns it sounds too much like Scarlett Johansson - The company says the voices in ChatGPT were from paid voice actors. A final five were selected from an initial pool of 400 and it's purely a coincidence the unnamed actress behind the Sky voice has a similar tone to Johansson. While the Sky voice and a version of ChatGPT Voice have been around for some time, the comparison to Johansson became more obvious due to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and many others, drawing the similarity between the new AI model and the movie "Her".
AI 'godfather' says universal basic income will be needed - Professor Geoffrey Hinton, regarded as the “godfather of artificial intelligence”, says the government will have to establish a universal basic income to deal with the impact of AI on inequality. He said while he felt AI would increase productivity and wealth, the money would go to the rich “and not the people whose jobs get lost and that’s going to be very bad for society”.
UK opens office in San Francisco to tackle AI risk - The AI Safety Institute, a U.K. body set up with the ambitious goal of assessing and addressing risks in AI platforms, has said it will open a second location in San Francisco. The idea is to get closer to the epicenter of AI development. Part of the reason is that being closer to that epicenter is useful not just for understanding what is being built, it also gives the U.K. more visibility with these firms.
EU warns Microsoft it could be fined billions over missing GenAI risk info - Back in March, the EU asked Microsoft and a number of other tech giants for information about systemic risks posed by generative AI tools. On Friday, the Commission said Microsoft failed to provide some of the documents it asked for. The Commission has given Microsoft until May 27 to supply the requested data or risk enforcement. The penalty could add up to a couple of billion dollars in Microsoft’s case.
Hollywood agency CAA aims to help stars manage their own AI likenesses - With many stars having their digital likeness used without permission, CAA has built a virtual media storage system for A-list talent — actors, athletes, comedians, directors, musicians, and more — to store their digital assets, such as their names, images, digital scans, voice recordings, and so on. Notably, the vault also ensures actors and other talent are rightfully compensated when companies use their digital likenesses.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Retail Market to Surpass USD 94.55 billion by 2031 - SkyQuest projects that Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Retail Market will attain a value of USD 94.55 Billion by 2031, with a CAGR of 32.68% over the forecast period (2024-2031). The increase in use of AI chatbot support is a major trend within the global artificial intelligence in retail market as it provides incredibly effective customer service capabilities.
Snapchat Aims to Spend $1.5 Billion Per Year on AI - “There was a recognition that we’d fallen behind the curve on the machine learning side, which, to some degree, was reflected in the business performance,” Evan Spiegel said. But rather than building their own AI tools in-house, the company is working with Amazon and Google on cloud partnerships.
Paris Vies for Europe's AI Crown as Key Conference Beckons - The "Viva Technology" conference will put French innovators front-and-center as attendees tackle key questions around artificial intelligence (AI), including its potential impact on upcoming elections and climate change.
Broadcom's New Networking Gear Aims To Resolve AI Data Center Bottlenecks - Broadcom announced a new portfolio of scalable, high-performance, low-power networking and switching products to resolve connectivity bottlenecks in data centers running artificial intelligence applications. This investment aims to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) business in Europe, and underscores Google’s commitment to enhancing its technological infrastructure and AI capabilities in the region.
Perplexity CEO: Why AI fundraising has become a rat race - Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas dismissed recent rumors that the company is raising a large new funding round. AI companies are always fundraising because there's a shortage of experts in AI model usage and scaling. These specialists are expensive, with salaries inflated by OpenAI's high pay and equity offers. As OpenAI's valuation soared from $15-20 billion to nearly $100 billion, salaries rose significantly. Now, other companies must offer similar pay to attract talent, increasing costs and driving the need for ongoing fundraising.
OpenAI leadership responds to former employee safety allegations - The company’s head of alignment, Jan Leike, resigned on May 17, stating they’d reached a “breaking point” with management. Among Leike’s allegations was the assertion that “safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products” at OpenAI. Sam Altman replied, "He's right, we have a lot more to do; we are committed to doing it."
How Businesses Can Navigate the AI Search Shake-Up - “It’s important for businesses to think of more than just pure on-page SEO optimization,” Ben Poulton, founder of the SEO agency Intellar said. “AI overviews tend to try and showcase the whole experience. That means additional content, more FAQs answered, customer feedback addressed on the page, details about walking distance and return policies for brands with a brick-and-mortar, all need to be readily available, as that will give you the best shot of being featured.”
