• OpenAI Shelves ChatGPT Watermarking Due to User Concerns - OpenAI has developed a system for watermarking text generated by ChatGPT and a tool to detect these watermarks, according to The Wall Street Journal. Despite having this capability ready for about a year, internal debates have delayed its release. While watermarking could be seen as a responsible measure, there are concerns it might impact the company's bottom line.

• Meta Enlists Celebrities for AI Voices Ahead of Meta Connect - Meta is enlisting stars such as Judi Dench, Keegan-Michael Key, and Awkwafina to lend their voices to its AI assistants. The tech giant aims to finalize these deals swiftly, preparing to unveil the new voices at its Meta Connect conference this September. The contracts would be temporary, allowing actors the option to renew as their terms expire. These celebrity voices would integrate across Meta’s platforms.

• Fully-Automatic Robot Dentist Performs First Human Procedure - In a historic moment for the dental profession, an AI-controlled autonomous robot has successfully performed an entire procedure on a human patient for the first time. The procedure was completed about 8 times faster than a human dentist could achieve. The robot’s first specialty is preparing a tooth for a dental crown, a procedure that typically takes dentists about two hours over two visits. The robo-dentist completes it in approximately 15 minutes.

• 'Game Changer' AI Detects Heart Attack Risk, Pilot Project Underway - Scientists have hailed a new AI model that identifies people at risk of heart attacks within the next decade as "game changing." This technology detects heart inflammation that is not visible on conventional CT scans, which rely on X-rays and computer technology. The AI technology helped 45% of these patients receive medication or lifestyle advice to reduce future heart attack risks.

• Nvidia Delays Next AI Chip "Blackwell" B200 Due to Design Flaw - Nvidia's next major AI chip, the "Blackwell" B200, may not ship in large quantities until next year due to a design flaw. Nvidia has informed Microsoft and at least one other cloud provider that the chips will take at least three months longer to produce than initially planned. Now, Nvidia will not ship large numbers of Blackwell chips until the first quarter of next year.

• Google Hires Character.AI Founders, Signs AI Licensing Deal - Startup Character.AI announced that it has entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Alphabet's Google. This deal grants Google access to Character.AI's large language model technology. Character.AI will receive additional funding as part of the agreement with Google, although the specific amount has not been disclosed.

• Microsoft Modifies AI Partnership with G42 Amid China Concerns - Microsoft is restructuring its partnership with UAE-based AI firm G42, following concerns about the company's connections to China. Microsoft plans to install greater safeguards around a sensitive part of the deal still under negotiation. As the company navigates these challenges, it aims to protect critical American technology while addressing geopolitical sensitivities.

• AI Safety Evaluations Have Significant Limitations, Report Finds - Despite the increasing demand for AI safety and accountability, current tests and benchmarks may not be sufficient. Generative AI models, which produce text, images, music, and videos, are under scrutiny for their mistakes and unpredictability. Various organizations are proposing new benchmarks to ensure these models' safety.

• AI Chip Startup Groq Raises $640M to Challenge Nvidia - Groq, a startup focused on developing chips to accelerate generative AI models, announced that it has raised $640 million in a new funding round led by BlackRock. The company claims its LPUs can run existing generative AI models, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT-4, at 10 times the speed and one-tenth the energy consumption of conventional processors.

• Wix Offers Google’s Gemini for Workspace, Enhancing Productivity - Wix has started offering its customers access to Google’s Gemini for Workspace artificial intelligence (AI) tool. This marks a significant milestone as Wix becomes the first partner to provide Gemini for Workspace. This integration allows users to perform tasks like writing documents, designing slideshows, summarizing emails, and organizing projects more efficiently.
