  • OpenAI created a team to control ‘superintelligent’ AI —then let it die one year later - OpenAI’s Superalignment team, tasked with steering superintelligent AI, was promised 20% of the company's compute resources but often faced denials, hindering their work. This led to several resignations, including co-lead Jan Leike, who worked on ChatGPT and GPT-4. “Building smarter-than-human machines is an inherently dangerous endeavor,” Leike continued. “But over the past years, safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products.” John Schulman, an OpenAI co-founder, will now oversee this work, with researchers integrated into various divisions instead of a dedicated team.

  • Hugging Face is sharing $10 million worth of compute to help beat the big AI companies - Hugging Face aims to level the playing field by donating these shared GPUs to the community through a new program called ZeroGPU. The shared GPUs are accessible to multiple users or applications concurrently, eliminating the need for each user or application to have a dedicated GPU.

  • Researchers build AI-driven sarcasm detector - Researchers in the Netherlands have built an AI-driven sarcasm detector that can spot when the lowest form of wit, and the highest form of intelligence, is being deployed. Being able to detect lowest form of wit could help AI interact with people more naturally, say scientists.

  • Sony warns 700 AI devs, music streaming companies against content misuse - Sony sent a letter to more than 700 companies warning them that it was prohibiting them from using its music for the training, development or commercialization of any AI system. Sony also opted out of any text and data mining of its content. Sony asked the companies to adopt “best practices” in order to protect artists and songwriters and asked the streaming services to update their terms of service to emphasize the prohibition of data mining and training on its content.

  • OpenAI and Reddit Partnership - OpenAI will enhance ChatGPT with Reddit content and new features, helping users engage with Reddit communities. By accessing Reddit’s Data API, OpenAI’s AI tools will better understand and showcase recent topics. This partnership also enables Reddit to introduce new AI-powered features for users and mods, leveraging OpenAI’s AI models. Additionally, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.

  • Reddit shares jump after-hours on OpenAI data-sharing deal - Reddit stock rose 11% in after-hours trading after the social media firm struck a data-sharing deal with OpenAI, the creator of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT.

  • Microsoft Unveils AMD-Powered AI Chips To Rival Nvidia - The tech giant’s Azure cloud service will integrate AMD’s MI300X AI chips and is expected to boost its AI capabilities, enabling customers to build and run large-scale AI models, offering an alternative to Nvidia’s high-demand H100 GPUs. This significant development will be detailed further at the upcoming Build developer conference next week.

  • AI infrastructure startup CoreWeave raises $7.5 billion in debt deal led by Blackstone - CoreWeave’s $7.5 billion debt financing follows a $1.1 billion funding round the startup announced two weeks ago. The money will pay for servers packed with graphics processing units, networking equipment and cabinets. CEO Michael Intrator told CNBC earlier this month that CoreWeave will be in 28 data centers by the end of this year.

  • How to Reduce Data Leakage Risks of ChatGPT and Copilot AI - While generative AI offers unprecedented opportunities for growth and efficiency, it also opens new avenues for data breaches, unauthorized access, and the potential misuse of sensitive information. By implementing a comprehensive security strategy for internal processes that addresses the unique challenges of AI technologies, businesses can leverage the benefits of AI while ensuring the security and privacy of their corporate data.

  • Artificial intelligence experts are under cyberattack - A Chinese-speaking hacking group is targeting individuals tied to a U.S. artificial intelligence company in an ongoing phishing attack, researchers at Proofpoint said Thursday. 10 individuals tied to the same "leading U.S.-based artificial intelligence organization" received a phishing email this month aimed at deploying trojan malware onto their devices.
