  A German telecommunications company wants to free smartphones from apps by replacing them with an AI-based assistant. The generative interface is powered by Brain.ai technology, which supposedly takes over the functions of a wide range of apps and can be controlled via voice and text.

• Singapore’s AI ambitions get a boost with $740 million investment plan - Singapore will pump more than 1 billion Singapore dollars (about $743 million) over the next five years to further boost AI capabilities. “The SG$1 billion allocation towards AI which also includes secure implementation of the National AI Strategy 2.0 demonstrates the government’s commitment towards fostering a trusted and responsible AI ecosystem."

• Meta's chief AI researcher says OpenAI's "world simulator" Sora is a dead end - Sora is widely perceived primarily as a text and video-to-video model. However, the real research goal of OpenAI is a world simulator. LeCun believes that generative models for sensory inputs will fail because it is too difficult to deal with the prediction uncertainty of high-dimensional continuous sensory inputs.

• Chinese EV maker Xpeng to hire 4,000, invest in AI - Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng said it would hire 4,000 employees this year and invest 3.5 billion yuan ($486.36 million) in AI research and development for intelligent driving, adding that Xpeng plans to release around 30 new products or revised models within three years.

• North Koreans using ChatGPT to scam LinkedIn users; "attacks are getting very sophisticated" - Targets include employees in cybersecurity, defense, and crypto sectors on platforms like LinkedIn.

  These campaigns typically involve using AI to impersonate legitimate entities, such as recruiters, to create fake recruiter profiles to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.

• X (fka Twitter) is in talks with Midjourney for a potential partnership - If Midjourney integrated with X, the technology could enable users to generate and share AI-powered visuals directly within the platform, adding a new dimension to their social media experience.

• Some users start to get "Shop with Google Al" on Google Search, generate AI outfits with a single click - Users with access to “Shop with Google AI” can search for items like “dress” and then click on the dedicated section within the search results. This section allows them to generate various images showcasing different styles, colors, or designs of the same product.

• Your fingerprints can be recreated from the sounds made when you swipe on a touchscreen — Chinese and US researchers show new side channel can reproduce fingerprints to enable attacks - The attack leverages the sound characteristics of a user’s finger swiping on a touchscreen to extract fingerprint pattern features. Following tests, the researchers assert that they can successfully attack “up to 27.9% of partial fingerprints and 9.3% of complete fingerprints within five attempts at the highest security FAR [False Acceptance Rate] setting of 0.01%.”

• Graphcore reportedly explores sale: Arm, OpenAI, and Softbank named as rumored potential buyers - Graphcore, a U.K.-based artificial intelligence (AI) processor developer, is facing difficulties raising money from investors and may be seeking a buyer for a deal worth around $500m.

• Wipro And IBM Amplify Partnership To Propel AI Adoption With New Services - The Wipro Enterprise AI-Ready Platform is designed to address the growing demand for AI solutions that can seamlessly integrate into existing business processes. By leveraging IBM’s watsonx AI and data platform, the initiative is geared towards fostering enterprise-level AI integration.

• Google Lays Off Thousands More Employees Despite Record Profits One Year After Laying off 12,000 Employees As Workers Begin Worrying AI is Slowly Replacing Them - The layoffs and the strategic emphasis on AI development have led to a sense of cynicism and burnout among the workforce, exacerbated by the fear of being replaced by the very technologies they are helping to create.

• Adobe Acrobat adds generative AI to ‘easily chat with documents’ - “AI Assistant in Acrobat,” the new tool is described as a “conversational engine” that can summarize files, answer questions, and recommend more based on the content, allowing users to “easily chat with documents” to get the information they need. It’s available in beta starting today for paying Acrobat users.

• Women in AI: Irene Solaiman, head of global policy at Hugging Face - Irene Solaiman began her career in AI as a researcher and public policy manager at OpenAI, where she led a new approach to the release of GPT-2, a predecessor to ChatGPT. She joined Hugging Face as the head of global policy. Her responsibilities there range from building and leading company AI policy globally to conducting socio-technical research. Solaiman also advises the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the professional association for electronics engineering, on AI issues, and is a recognized AI expert at the intergovernmental Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
