• Tech companies sign accord to combat AI-generated election trickery - Tech executives from Adobe, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and TikTok gathered at the Munich Security Conference to announce a new voluntary framework for how they will respond to AI-generated deepfakes that deliberately trick voters.

• New chip opens door to AI computing at light speed - University of Pennsylvania engineers have developed a new chip that uses light waves, rather than electricity, to perform the complex math essential to training AI. The chip has the potential to radically accelerate the processing speed of computers while also reducing their energy consumption.

• 3 ways businesses should prepare for the AI transformation - Only 14% of businesses across the globe are prepared to leverage and deploy artificial intelligence. • US Bank partners Pagaya Technologies for inclusive lending with AI - The partnership will see the bank adopt its partner’s embedded lending technology and credit intelligence network to induce a “second review” of a loan application should the applicant fail to meet its traditional lending requirements the first time around.

• Europe’s Digital Services Act applies in full from tomorrow — here’s what you need to know - The Digital Services Act (DSA) is a massive endeavour by the EU to set an online governance framework for platforms and use transparency obligations as a tool to squeeze illegal content and products off the regional internet.

• Anthropic takes steps to prevent election misinformation - Called Prompt Shield, the technology, which relies on a combination of AI detection models and rules, shows a pop-up if a U.S.-based user of Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot, asks for voting information. The pop-up offers to redirect the user to TurboVote, a resource from the nonpartisan organization Democracy Works, where they can find up-to-date, accurate voting information.

• How Neara uses AI to protect utilities from extreme weather - Neara is focused on enabling utility companies and energy providers to create models of their power networks and anything that might affect them, like wildfires or flooding.

• No ‘GPT’ trademark for OpenAI - The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied OpenAI’s attempt to trademark “GPT,” ruling that the term is “merely descriptive” and therefore unable to be registered.

• AI in school: Ohio builds artificial intelligence toolkit for teachers, students - Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted encouraged schools to investigate AI curriculum, weighing the benefits of the new technology along with issues like student privacy, data security and ethics.

• SAP names Philipp Herzig as chief artificial intelligence officer - SAP aims to accelerate the pace of its AI development, and customers should be able to use SAP business AI consistently across the entire SAP portfolio.
