Reddit to Test AI-Powered Search Result Pages with Summaries
Reddit users will soon experience AI-generated summaries at the top of their search results. This new feature was announced by Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman during the company's earnings call on Tuesday. The AI-powered search result pages aim to "summarize and recommend content," helping users "dive deeper" into topics and discover new Reddit communities.
Technology and Implementation
Huffman explained that Reddit will utilize a combination of first-party and third-party technology to power this feature. The company plans to start testing AI-powered search result pages later this year. This initiative follows Reddit's recent partnership with OpenAI, which allows the platform to leverage OpenAI’s large language models to develop AI-powered features for Redditors and moderators. A similar agreement was signed with Google earlier this year, giving both tech giants permission to use Reddit's data.
AI Integration and Expansion
The incorporation of AI has been a focal point in Reddit's recent endeavors. Huffman highlighted the success of Reddit’s AI-powered language translation feature, noting that France is one of its fastest-growing user bases. The company is now expanding the translation feature to include German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Quarterly Earnings Report
Today marked the second time Reddit reported its quarterly earnings since going public. For the second quarter, the company reported 342.3 million weekly active users, a 57% increase from the previous year. Revenue also saw a significant rise, reaching $281.2 million, surpassing Wall Street estimates of $253.8 million.
Future Prospects
As Reddit continues to integrate AI into its platform, the company aims to enhance user experience by providing more relevant and engaging content. The upcoming AI-powered search result pages are expected to significantly improve content discovery and community engagement.
