OpenAI Unveils GPT-4o Mini - Affordable, High-Performance AI Model

OpenAI introduced its latest small AI model, GPT-4o mini, on Thursday. This new model is designed to be cheaper and faster than OpenAI’s existing cutting-edge AI models. It is available to developers and consumers through the ChatGPT web and mobile app starting today, with enterprise users gaining access next week.

Performance and Popularity

GPT-4o mini outperforms leading small AI models in reasoning tasks involving text and vision. As smaller models improve, they are increasingly favored by developers due to their speed and cost efficiency compared to larger models like GPT-4 Omni or Claude 3.5 Sonnet. These models are ideal for high-volume, simple tasks that require frequent AI model calls.

Benchmark and Cost Efficiency

GPT-4o mini will replace GPT-3.5 Turbo as OpenAI’s smallest model offering. The new model scores 82% on the MMLU benchmark for reasoning, compared to 79% for Gemini 1.5 Flash and 75% for Claude 3 Haiku, according to Artificial Analysis. Additionally, GPT-4o mini is significantly more affordable to run, being more than 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo.

Capabilities and Future Enhancements

Currently, GPT-4o mini supports text and vision in the API, with plans to add video and audio capabilities in the future. OpenAI’s Head of Product API, Olivier Godemont, highlighted the importance of making AI models more affordable to empower every corner of the world. He described GPT-4o mini as a significant step in that direction.

Pricing and Specifications

For developers using OpenAI’s API, GPT-4o mini is priced at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens. The model has a context window of 128,000 tokens, roughly the length of a book, and a knowledge cutoff of October 2023.

Comparison with Other Models

While OpenAI did not disclose the exact size of GPT-4o mini, it stated that the model is in the same tier as other small AI models like Llama 3 8b, Claude Haiku, and Gemini 1.5 Flash. However, GPT-4o mini is claimed to be faster, more cost-efficient, and smarter than these leading small models. Before its launch, GPT-4o mini was tested on the LMSYS.org chatbot arena to assess its competitiveness.
