OpenAI to Release o3 Model Soon, Delays GPT-5 Launch

OpenAI has changed its plans and announced it will release its long-delayed o3 reasoning model and a follow-up, o4-mini, in the coming weeks—despite having previously shelved the public launch of o3 earlier this year.

GPT-5 Delayed, But Promises Major Improvements

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the update on Friday via X (formerly Twitter), linking the decision to the development of GPT-5, which is now delayed but expected to be significantly improved over earlier projections.

“[W]e are going to be able to make GPT-5 much better than we originally thought,” Altman wrote. “[W]e also found it harder than we thought it was going to be to smoothly integrate everything. [A]nd we want to make sure we have enough capacity to support what we expect to be unprecedented demand.”

GPT-5 is now expected to roll out “in a few months.” When it launches, the model will incorporate multiple tools and capabilities including voice, Canvas, search, and deep research. Altman has described GPT-5 as a unified system that can dynamically adjust its reasoning and tool use depending on the task.

Tiered Access to GPT-5

According to OpenAI, users will access GPT-5 through various tiers:

  • Free Users: Unlimited chat at a standard intelligence setting (with abuse safeguards)

  • ChatGPT Plus Subscribers: Access to a higher level of intelligence

  • ChatGPT Pro Subscribers: Use of the model at an even higher performance level

Ongoing Push for Openness and New Models

OpenAI also revealed plans to release a new open language model with reasoning capabilities—its first since GPT-2. The model will be available in the coming months and subject to enhanced safety testing. This move appears to respond to mounting competition from companies like DeepSeek, which take a more open approach to AI model development and sharing.

OpenAI’s upcoming lineup includes:

  • o3 (reasoning model)

  • o3 pro

  • o4-mini

  • GPT-5

  • A new open-source reasoning model

Looking Ahead

OpenAI’s revised release strategy signals both technical challenges and strategic shifts as it prepares for growing demand and rising competition. While GPT-5’s delay may disappoint some users, the promise of a more capable and integrated system—and a return to open model development—points to a broader vision for the future of AI.
