Google Launches Custom Chatbots with Gems for Gemini Subscribers

Google has launched a new feature for its Gemini subscribers, allowing them to create custom chatbots called Gems. These personalized chatbots can be tailored with specific characteristics and instructions, making them a versatile tool for various tasks. Users can easily name their chatbot, provide it with instructions, and begin using it right away.

“You can create and save Gems to customize responses in Gemini Apps to your specific needs,” Google announced.

Pre-Made and Customizable Options

For those who prefer not to create their own chatbot, Google offers pre-made Gems that are ready to use. Customizing a chatbot with Gems is particularly beneficial for repetitive tasks, as it eliminates the need to input instructions separately each time, streamlining the user experience.

Gems Rolling Out to Gemini Subscribers

First introduced during Google’s I/O event in May, the Gems feature is now available to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscribers on both mobile and desktop platforms. The feature is a paid addition and is accessible in over 150 countries and more than 30 languages, making it widely available to users around the globe.

Competing with OpenAI

Google’s introduction of Gems appears to be a strategic move to keep pace with OpenAI, which previously launched custom GPTs accessible through the GPT Store. This feature allowed users to create their own personalized GPTs, similar to Google’s new offering.

Limitations and Additional Features

Google has noted some limitations with the Gems feature, such as the inability to use Gems for generating images or compatibility with Gemini Live. However, Google is also resuming its ability to generate images of people using the Gemini AI chatbot. This feature, powered by Google’s upgraded Imagen 3, will be available to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in English in the coming days. Imagen 3 was launched earlier this month and is available across all languages on Gemini.

Previously, Google had halted the ability to generate images of people with Gemini after issues with historically inaccurate images. The new image generation feature includes built-in safety measures to ensure more accurate and responsible outputs.
