Google Extends Gemini AI to Teen Students' School Accounts

Google announced that it is extending its AI technology Gemini to teen students using their school accounts, following its previous release to teens with personal accounts. This rollout also includes new tools for educators.

Google believes that providing access to Gemini will equip teens with essential skills to thrive in a world where generative AI is prevalent. Gemini offers students real-time feedback, enhancing their confidence in learning.

Data Privacy and Safety Measures

Google has assured that data from student interactions with Gemini will not be used to train its AI models. The platform includes guardrails to prevent inappropriate content, such as illegal substances, from appearing in responses. Additionally, Gemini encourages teens to use its double-check feature, promoting information literacy and critical thinking.

Global Availability and Admin Controls

Gemini will be available in English to teen students using their Google Workspace for Education accounts across more than 100 countries. By default, Gemini will be turned off for teens until school admins decide to enable it.

New Tools for Educators

Google is also launching the Read Along in Classroom feature globally, which helps students develop reading skills with real-time support. Educators can assign reading activities based on grade level or phonics skills and monitor students' reading accuracy, speed, and comprehension. Additionally, Google is piloting personalized story generation tailored to individual student needs.

To further support educators, Google is introducing tools to create, manage, and share interactive lessons more efficiently. Teachers will also have the ability to mark assignments as missing or complete manually and perform bulk scoring actions.
