Gmail's Smart Reply Feature Gets Smarter with AI Integration

Gmail's "Smart Reply" feature has just received a major upgrade. Introduced in 2017, the feature initially offered simple, one-tap responses to cut down on response time for short emails. Now, thanks to AI integration, it’s smarter than ever, offering more contextualized responses based on the entire email thread.

What’s New with Smart Reply?

The latest update allows Gmail to generate more detailed reply suggestions, which take the entire email conversation into account rather than just offering generic responses like "Thank you." Users can preview and select from a set of suggested responses, make edits if needed, and send them with a tap.

Availability for Premium Users

This enhanced Smart Reply feature is currently available to premium Google Workspace and Google One AI subscribers (at $19.99 per month). The rollout has already begun for iOS and Android, but at the moment, it only supports replies in English. A full rollout to all eligible users is expected within the next few weeks.

How to Use the Updated Smart Reply

If you’re part of a premium plan, you can start using the feature by hitting the reply icon on any email. Contextualized reply suggestions will appear at the bottom of the screen, just above the keyboard, allowing for quick and easy responses.

Google’s Broader AI Push

This update is part of a broader effort by Google to enhance its AI offerings. Recently, the company added the Imagen 3 text-to-image AI model to Gemini, their AI platform, to address previous issues with image generation. New features are also being added to NotebookLM, Google's AI-powered note-taking platform, alongside expanded file type support for Gemini.
