Uber has announced a new feature aimed at supporting its push to increase the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on its platform. Starting in early 2025, Uber will launch an AI assistant for drivers in the U.S., powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o. The chatbot will be accessible directly from the Uber driver app, offering answers to common questions about electric vehicles.

At launch, the AI assistant will focus solely on EV-related inquiries, such as where to find charging stations or which EV model might be the best fit for a driver. However, according to an Uber spokesperson, the AI's functionality could expand to address other driver concerns in the future. Uber revealed the integration with OpenAI’s GPT-4o during its Go-Get event in London, noting that the AI can engage in human-like conversations across text, audio, and vision.

Personalized Assistance and Future Updates

The AI assistant will provide tailored information based on the driver's needs, the city they live in, personalized preferences, and available government incentives for EV ownership. Drivers will also have the option to interact with the assistant via text or voice commands, and the assistant will respond audibly in the future.

While details on language support are still to come, OpenAI’s GPT-4o model can operate in over 50 languages. Uber plans to release more information on language capabilities closer to the launch date.

Incentives for EV Mentorship

As part of the AI rollout, Uber is introducing an EV mentorship program, where highly-rated experienced EV drivers can mentor others and earn cash rewards and incentives. This initiative aims to guide new EV drivers and help them navigate the transition to electric vehicles.

Uber’s Broader Focus on EVs and Sustainability

The AI assistant announcement is part of a broader initiative from Uber to make it easier for drivers and riders to choose EVs. During the Go-Get event, the company also announced updates to its Uber Green program, which allows riders to choose hybrid or EV rides in over 180 markets. Uber is now introducing an EV-only option in 40 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Paris, and Auckland, and more, with plans to expand this feature to more locations in the future. Riders also have the option to adjust their settings in the Uber app to prioritize electric vehicles (EVs) whenever one is available nearby.

What This Means for the Future

The launch of Uber's AI assistant underscores the increasing role AI is playing in the transition to electric vehicles. By providing drivers with instant, personalized support, Uber is streamlining the adoption of EVs and helping drivers make informed decisions. As the technology evolves, it could pave the way for more advanced integrations across the ride-hailing industry, further promoting sustainability and innovation.
