Elon Musk Announces Grok 2's Expected Release Next Month
Elon Musk has announced that Grok 2, the next generation of his AI tool Grok, will likely be ready for release next month. The billionaire provided this update in response to a news headline about xAI’s chatbot Grok on X (formerly Twitter).
"Grok 2 is going through finetuning and bug fixes. Probably ready to release next month," Musk stated.
This AI tool is available to all X users who subscribe to the Premium Plus service at $16 per month (or $22 via the app). Unlike traditional chatbots such as ChatGPT, Grok is designed with a politically incorrect and witty personality.
Grok is unique in its real-time knowledge of current events, including the latest in AI technology, and is fully integrated into the X platform. The company behind it, xAI, aims to accelerate human scientific discovery through artificial intelligence.
Musk also shared insights on xAI's broader operations, revealing that the chatbot has been trained on 24,000 H100 GPUs. "xAI is building the 100,000 H100 system itself for the fastest time to completion. Aiming to begin training later this month. It will be the most powerful training cluster in the world by a large margin," Musk explained.
Rather than outsourcing, xAI has developed the 100,000 H100 system internally to maintain a competitive edge. "This is the only way to catch up," Musk emphasized, highlighting ongoing discussions with Oracle and another promising company regarding a server deal.
"Oracle is a great company and there is another company that shows promise also involved in that OpenAI GB200 cluster. But when our fate depends on being the fastest by far, we must have our own hands on the steering wheel, rather than be a backseat driver," Musk wrote.
While a specific release date for Grok 2 has not been announced, Musk is expected to share the news on his social media platform.
