Defcon AI Secures $44M to Revolutionize Military Logistics with AI

Defcon AI, a Virginia-based startup, is taking on one of the most complex challenges within the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD): military logistics. With a $44 million seed round led by Bessemer Venture Partners and contributions from Fifth Growth Fund, Red Cell Partners, and others, Defcon AI aims to transform how military operations are planned and executed.

The DOD is the largest and most complex military organization in the world, with millions of service members, hundreds of thousands of civilian employees, and an enormous budget to manage. Coordinating operations across various agencies within the DOD requires meticulous planning, resource management, and adherence to budget constraints—all while responding to potential crises like natural disasters or adversarial actions.

Defcon AI's software is designed to address these challenges by allowing operators to input parameters and constraints for various scenarios—such as airlifts by the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command—and then generating optimized plans that account for cost, resource requirements, and schedules. The software's ability to simulate adversarial disruptions and optimize for different variables makes it an invaluable tool for defense operators who need to make decisions quickly and accurately, especially during crises.

A Veteran-Led Startup

Co-founded by retired U.S. Air Force General Paul Selva, along with Yisroel Brumer and Grant Verstandig, Defcon AI leverages deep military and defense experience to build a solution that directly addresses the needs of military planners. Selva, who held top positions including Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, brings extensive knowledge of military logistics, while Brumer and Verstandig contribute expertise from their careers in the Pentagon and successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Defcon’s Technological Edge

Defcon AI combines machine learning and mathematical optimization algorithms to simulate scenarios and generate optimal logistical outcomes. Initially, the startup used reinforcement learning algorithms that didn’t require data, but as the software evolved, it began ingesting more data from the DOD to enhance its accuracy and effectiveness. The system can now simulate adversarial disruptions and optimize for speed, cost-effectiveness, and other critical factors.

Expanding Applications and Future Goals

Defcon AI has already secured around $15 million in government contracts and has successfully deployed its software in real-world operations with the Air Mobility Command. The company is currently in the process of certifying its software to handle classified information, which will enable it to be used more extensively within the DOD. Additionally, Defcon AI plans to expand its capabilities to include logistical planning for trucks, trains, and ships.
