Andrej Karpathy Launches Eureka Labs - AI in Education
Andrej Karpathy, former head of AI at Tesla and researcher at OpenAI, has announced the launch of Eureka Labs, an "AI native" education platform designed to revolutionize learning through AI. The San Francisco-based company, registered as an LLC in Delaware on June 21, aims to leverage advancements in generative AI to create AI teaching assistants that can guide students through course materials.
Eureka Labs: A New Approach to Education
Eureka Labs is dedicated to creating a new kind of school experience by integrating AI deeply into the learning process. The goal is to provide high-quality educational experiences akin to having renowned experts, like Richard Feynman, guiding students through complex subjects. However, instead of relying solely on human tutors, Eureka Labs plans to use AI teaching assistants to support and scale the efforts of human educators.
The AI teaching assistants will help expand education both in reach and depth, making it easier for more people to learn a wide array of subjects. According to Karpathy, this Teacher + AI symbiosis could run an entire curriculum on a common platform, enhancing the learning experience and accessibility.
Introducing LLM101n
Eureka Labs' first product will be LLM101n, an undergraduate-level course designed to guide students through training their own AI, similar to a smaller version of the AI teaching assistant envisioned by the company. The course materials will be available online, and the startup plans to run both digital and physical cohorts.
Currently, the team is focused on building LLM101n, with hopes that AI will significantly increase human potential in the future. Eureka Labs aims to create an environment where anyone can learn anything, making high-quality education accessible on a global scale.
Karpathy's Journey and Vision
Karpathy's interest in AI and education spans over two decades, from creating YouTube tutorials on Rubik's cubes to teaching courses at Stanford University. His professional journey includes academic research at Stanford, real-world AI product development at Tesla, and AGI research at OpenAI.
Karpathy's work at Tesla involved leading the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot, the automaker's advanced driving assistance system. After leaving Tesla in 2022, he returned to OpenAI to lead a team related to ChatGPT, before stepping down earlier this year.
Throughout his career, Karpathy has maintained a passion for education, offering online courses like "Neural Networks: Zero to Hero" and sharing AI lectures on his YouTube channel. Eureka Labs is the culmination of his dedication to combining AI and education, now pursued full-time.
The Future of Eureka Labs
While Eureka Labs aims to integrate AI teaching assistants into classrooms, its immediate focus is on launching LLM101n. The company's website provides limited details, but Karpathy's vision suggests a future where AI significantly enhances educational opportunities.
Karpathy has not disclosed whether Eureka Labs is self-funded or backed by investors, and no public filings of investments have been found. The startup's LLC filing in California is signed solely by Karpathy, with no mention of other high-profile collaborators.
Eureka Labs aspires to spark "Eureka" moments in learners' minds, driven by Karpathy's long-standing passion for both AI and education.
