AI Journalism Labs: Free Hybrid Programs for Journalists to Explore AI
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY has announced an exciting opportunity for journalists to embark on a journey of innovation with the launch of the AI Journalism Labs. These tuition-free, hybrid programs are designed to help journalists explore the growing role of generative AI in the media landscape, providing them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
A Partnership for the Future
Developed by J+, the professional development arm of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, and supported by Microsoft, the AI Journalism Labs aim to involve journalists in the ethical use of AI. Through these 3-month programs, participants will navigate AI’s potential to increase trust, impact, and strategic decision-making in their newsrooms. By alternating between seminars led by AI experts and hands-on labs, the programs ensure participants not only learn about AI but also experiment with it directly.
Two Key Programs for 2025
The AI Journalism Labs offer two tracks, each focusing on different aspects of AI adoption in journalism:
AI J Lab: Leadership (January - April 2025)
This track is designed for journalists in leadership roles, strategists, and executives across editorial, tech, and product roles. It focuses on how AI can shape newsroom leadership in the 21st century, offering insights into AI strategy, ethical decision-making, and business modeling. Participants will learn how to use AI to make smarter strategic decisions, improve product and audience engagement, and build an AI-driven culture within their organizations.
AI J Lab: Adoption (April - July 2025)
Tailored for local journalists, managers, and academics, this program focuses on helping newsrooms that are just beginning their AI journey. Participants will explore what generative AI is capable of today and in the future, how to build custom AI tools, and how to address the ethical and legal considerations of AI in journalism. The goal is to provide newsrooms with the skills and knowledge needed to adopt AI effectively.
Why This Matters
As AI technology continues to evolve, journalists need to understand its potential and limitations. Poolside encourages direct experimentation with AI so that journalists can think critically and strategically about how it can be applied to their work. By offering practical knowledge through capstone projects and coaching, the AI Journalism Labs equip participants with the skills needed to lead in this new era of media.
