(LOS ANGELES, CA) -- For a long time, any woman working in the sex industry was little more than eye candy, used by men to sell to men. Now, all of that has changed. More and more women are working in the industry in different capacities, behind the camera and in many other positions throughout the business. Marking a first in the publishing world, Naked Ambition (Carroll & Graf, $15.95) gives voice to a new generation of women shaping not only the sexual material we consume, but how we think and talk about sex.
"The whole concept of the book is to show that women are not only watching and enjoying sexually-oriented materials, they're also directing, creating, selling and writing about it," says Naked Ambition editor, Carly Milne. "Porn has long been a confrontational social force that many feminists and right-wingers have espoused as being dangerous and degrading to women, but that's just not the case."
Milne will host a reading on Thursday, October 20th from 7 - 9pm at Hustler Hollywood, located at 8920 Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. Some of the book's contributors will be on hand to read their work and discuss their own viewpoints. Readers include:
Violet Blue (author)
Regina Lynn (Wired)
Dana Harris (Variety)
Holly Randall (erotic photographer)
Nina Hartley (porn star)
Katie Smith (internet marketing guru)
Hester Nash (curator of RetroRaunch.com)
Joanna Angel (founder of Burning Angel.com)
Theresa Flynt (Hustler Hollywood/LFP)
Jodi Marie Lindquist (art director for Pure Play Media)
The reading is open to the public, and will be followed by a private party at Nacional (1645 Wilcox). Friends, family and media are invited to RSVP for the party to Brad Thomas at brad@IntoxicateU.com, or call 818 515 3760.
Naked Ambition is a ground-breaking work. No book before has examined the evolution of this body of work, much less in the voices of the women responsible for it. Thus, Naked Ambition charts this course by inviting thirty-one of the leading women involved in adult entertainment and the proliferation of it to share their ideas, experiences, histories, and passions, so that we might better understand the profound influence that porn has had in helping liberate a newer, younger generation of women into claiming their sexual selves on their own terms. Naked Ambition is in stores now.
