Musician-Writer Mick Farren on Pete Townshend Investigation
Source: AVN
by: Company Press Release

(CHATSWORTH, CA) -- British musician-journalist Mick Farren says guitarist Pete Townshend of the Who will "need more than good will and a foolhardy openness" to survive the next phase of his battle to prove he is not a pedophile. Farren covers the investigation of the rock 'n' roll legend in the March issue of AVN Online magazine.

Townshend was detained and questioned by Scotland Yard detectives in January during an anti-child porn investigation when it was discovered that he had downloaded child pornography from the Internet. He has denied he is a pedophile and said he came upon the illicit material while doing research for his support of a Russian orphanage program.

Writing in the leading adult industry Internet trade publication, Farren says that "before any court hearing, Pete will face judgment by the media and public opinion, and much of that judgment would seem to be based on whether or not we believe that his intentions were good. Already the photograph has been widely circulated in the media showing the furious guitar god reduced to a sad, somewhat creepy, frightened old man in the back of a police car," writes Farren, who has known Townshend personally since the 1960s and says he likes and respects him.

Farren, author of more than 20 books and writer of lyrics for bands such as Metallica and Motorhead, said that "sensing a celebrity sex scandal, the media (went) into wildly inaccurate action when Townshend was held for questioning" and now journalists are examining every aspect of his life and music career, searching "For a smoking pedophile."

"Pete Townshend is well liked, and maintains a healthy credit balance of good will, despite the flaws and contradictions in his statements," Farren writes in AVN Online. "He may, however, need more than good will and a foolhardy openness to make it through the next few months with his reputation intact." Farren says Townshend will need to prove beyond any doubt that he inadvertently downloaded illicit material while working on a research project.
