Phony Plastic Surgeon Arrested
(MEXICO CITY) -- Plastic was the alleged scam artist's specialty, but he didn't stop at credit cards. He also passed himself off as a surgeon.
Washington Adolfo Roman Quinteros, described as a secondary-school dropout from Argentina, was arrested by federal police on Thursday in the northern city of Monterrey, where he posed as an Argentine consul using a passport falsified to identify him as a diplomat, the federal attorney general's office reported Saturday.
The office said Roman Quinteros had ``deceived hundreds of Mexican women from various states of the republic'' by posing as a plastic surgeon and convincing them to let him sketch them in the nude. ``Afterward he carried out operations which put their life and health in grave risk,'' it said in a news release.
It said he had not completed secondary school, which ends in the 9th grade in Latin American countries.
In other countries, the agency said, Roman Quinteros is accused of committing credit card fraud, trading in stolen U.S. cars, and falsifying documents - including forging the signature of former Argentine President Carlos Menem.
The international police coordination agency Interpol was involved in the arrest.
Also taken into custody was Ricardo Sebastian Rodriguez, another Argentine citizen, who accompanied Roman Quinteros in a Mercedes Benz with false diplomatic license plates, the agency said.
