Spanish Firemen Rally for Equipment

(MALAGA, Spain) -- Several hundred firefighters marched Wednesday in support of colleagues in a tourist resort who have tried everything from scaling a hotel facade to stripping naked before city councilors to press demands for new equipment.
The protesters wore helmets and other work gear as they marched through Malaga, capital of the province with the same name that includes Torremolinos, a beach town of 42,000 that draws a million visitors to southern Spain's Costa del Sol each year.
Torremolinos' 45 firemen say town hall has neglected them and their equipment so badly that they have driven around in firetrucks with faulty brakes.
``We have come close to hitting people,'' spokesman Antonio Albuera said.
He said that for months the firemen have sought a meeting with Mayor Pedro Fernandez Montes with no luck. A town hall official said the firemen have not requested the meeting through formal channels but rather through the media.
Ten of the firemen staged a Full Monty-style striptease at a town hall meeting in December. And in Madrid last month, several hung from ropes outside a hotel where Torremolinos tourism officials were hosting a dinner as part of a trade show.
