  • OpenAI Startup Fund quietly raises $15M - According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, two unnamed investors contributed the $15 million in new cash on or around April 19. The paperwork was submitted on April 25, and mentions Ian Hathaway, the OpenAI Startup Fund’s manager and sole partner. The capital was transferred to a legal entity called a special purpose vehicle, or SPV, associated with the OpenAI Startup Fund: OpenAI Startup Fund SPV II, L.P.

  • Chipmaker Intel falls as AI competition hurts forecast - Intel shares slumped more than 12% on Friday after a downbeat forecast signaled that the boom in AI was diverting enterprise spending away from its traditional data center chips.

  • AI can make maternal ultrasonography more accessible, accurate and efficient - AI improves ultrasound technology by providing sophisticated picture analysis, work automation and tools for decision assistance. That could completely change the landscape for perinatal care and greatly improve outcomes, says the director of obstetric imaging at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, especially in settings where this was not previously possible.

  • DeepL launches AI writing assistant for businesses trained on its own LLM - Dubbed DeepL Write Pro, the product acts as a creative assistant for use during the drafting process. It provides suggestions on word choice, phrasing, style, and tone, aiming to improve the text, while preserving the writer’s own voice.

  • U.S., China to hold first AI talks within ‘weeks’ amid ongoing TikTok stalemate - The two sides have agreed to the first U.S.- China intergovernmental dialogue on AI to discuss the risks and safety concerns surrounding the emerging technology "to share our respective views on risks and safety concerns around advanced AI and how best to manage them,” Blinken said during a press conference. Blinken said TikTok “did not come up” in the talks.

  • Pope will attend G7 summit to discuss AI, Italy says - The pope this year warned against the “perverse” dangers of AI and renewed a call for worldwide regulations to harness it for the common good. “It is the first time in history that a pontiff will take part in the workings of a G7,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The pope will join a session dedicated to AI, calling it one of “the greatest anthropological challenges of our time”.

  • Microsoft says cloud AI demand is exceeding supply even after 79% surge in capital spending - In its earnings report on Thursday, Microsoft said capital expenditures jumped 79% from a year earlier to $14 billion. The company is spending much faster than it’s increasing revenue — sales climbed 17% in the period. Even with all that investment, Microsoft has a shortage of data center infrastructure, specifically for deploying artificial intelligence models.

  • Google, MIT RAISE launch no-cost AI training course for teachers - Google and MIT RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education) have announced a no-cost Generative AI for Educators Course designed to help middle and high school teachers use generative AI tools to personalize instruction to meet student needs, develop creative lessons and activities, and save time on administrative tasks.

  • Beijing city to subsidize domestic AI chips, targets self-reliance by 2027 - Beijing city authorities have announced subsidies for firms that purchase domestically produced AI chips, as China seeks to develop its semiconductor industry and reduce reliance on foreign technology. Under the initiative, the city targets 100% self-reliance in smart computing infrastructure hardware and software by 2027.

  • AI-powered home security system strikes back with paintballs and tear gas - A company from Slovenia, called PaintCam, is shaking things up in the security world with a new device called the PaintCam Eve. It’s not just another security camera watching over your house. This thing packs a punch with paintball and tear gas projectiles to really give intruders a surprise they won’t soon forget. It can identify human faces and animals even in low-light conditions, distinguishing between friends and foes. When Eve detects an intruder, it issues a stern warning, and if not heeded, it proceeds to launch paintballs or tear gas.

  • Sam Altman To Serve In Government’s AI Safety Board - The US Government has introduced the AI Safety Board and has invited OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, and Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang to join the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board. The group will work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to ensure the secure use of AI and its numerous tools.

  • University of Illinois researchers find GPT-4 can now exploit real-life security flaws - Computer scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found in a paper published this month that GPT-4 can write malicious scripts to exploit known vulnerabilities using publicly available data. The data contains "real-world, high severity vulnerabilities instead of 'capture-the-flag' style vulnerabilities," per the paper. Tested models included versions of GPT, Llama and Mistral. GPT-4 was the only model that could exploit the vulnerabilities based on CVE data, with an 87% success rate.

  • Space industry races to put AI in orbit - Putting AI devices on satellites could give them more autonomy to navigate space junk & other satellites using data they collect in real time. On-board AI processing can also help researchers better leverage the streams of data satellites collect to take the pulse of Earth's forests and fields, monitor methane emissions, and track illegal fishing and other activities and events. But, the harsh conditions of space have so far limited the use of AI on board satellites that play a critical role in the space economy.
