Today’s Headlines:

  • Introducing Devin, the first AI software engineer - Cognition AI just introduced Devin, an autonomous AI agent that can independently write entire software projects from scratch based on simple text prompts. In demos, Devin built complete websites and apps in under 10 minutes and successfully completed real gigs posted on Upwork by itself. On a coding benchmark, the AI agent solved 13.86% of real-world GitHub issues end-to-end, crushing the previous SOTA benchmark of 1.96%.

  • OpenAI's GPT-4.5 Turbo leaked on search engines and could launch in June - A likely date for the official unveiling is this coming Thursday - the anniversary of the release of GPT-4. A few days ago, OpenAI CEO Altman held out the prospect of a new AI model "worth the wait." The teaser description indicates that GPT-4.5 Turbo is up-to-date until June 2024, suggesting that the new Turbo model will be released in June.

  • Five of this year’s Pulitzer finalists are AI-powered - Five of the 45 finalists in this year’s Pulitzer Prizes for journalism disclosed using AI in the process of researching, reporting, or telling their submissions. It’s the first time the awards, which received around 1,200 submissions this year, required entrants to disclose AI usage.

  • World’s first major act to regulate AI passed by European lawmakers - The EU AI Act divides the technology into categories of risk, ranging from “unacceptable” — which would see the technology banned — to high, medium and low hazard. The regulation is expected to enter into force at the end of the legislature in May, after passing final checks and receiving endorsement from the European Council.

  • DeepMind Co-founder on AGI and the AI Race - SXSW 2024- Current foundation models are at 'expert' level 3 of AGI, but they still need to reach psychology's 'System 2' of thinking. DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg said AGI is coming soon but the full spectrum of practical application is "decades away."

  • Meta's new AI tools will get you shopping even more on Instagram - Now brands can "optimize" their videos, creating multiple variations of an ad so they're more personalized to each user. There's also an option to deliver product recommendations to a person based on their timeline, using branded videos or customer demonstration videos.

  • Microsoft to launch generative AI security software as competition continues to grow - The service, which hits the market April 1, is meant to help cybersecurity professionals better understand security threats and cut down on the time it takes to discover security issues.

  • Forget the "Magnificent Seven": 1 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock That Could Double - Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) outperformed 5 of the 7 members of the "Magnificent Seven" over the last year, recording a 152% gain.

  • As AI use grows, we must articulate ‘the enduring principles that define journalism’ - As a global society, we have not updated these principles for the digital era. For any plan to be successful, journalists must ensure that developments in AI and AI policy strengthen journalism, both in newsgathering and in serving that news to the public in a way that distinguishes it from other content.

  • Women in AI: Sandra Wachter, professor of data ethics at Oxford - Sandra Wachter is a professor and senior researcher in data ethics, AI, robotics, algorithms and regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute. She’s also a former fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the U.K.’s national institute for data science and AI. While at the Turing Institute, Wachter evaluated the ethical and legal aspects of data science, highlighting cases where opaque algorithms have become racist and sexist. She also looked at ways to audit AI to tackle disinformation and promote fairness.

  • Luminary Cloud’s simulator taps GPUs to help speed up product design - “Luminary is a simulation and analysis company, but we’ll eventually become a data company,” he continued. “With AI and machine learning capabilities, [our] platform could not only provide suggestions for how and where to make modifications to improve and optimize designs, but additionally learn how to set up, solve and visualize simulations better, allowing even novice users to extract significant insights.”

  • Anti-AI sentiment gets big applause at SXSW 2024 as moviemaker dubs AI cheerleading as ‘terrifying bullsh**’ - At the SXSW conference, the anti-AI sentiment expressed by acclaimed directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert received significant approval. They discussed AI's unstoppable growth and its approach, critiquing modern capitalism's narrative that equates personal value with job performance, diminishing inherent human worth. Kwan highlighted the adverse effects of social media, which, despite aiming to unite us, has led to unprecedented loneliness. However, he remains optimistic about using AI to develop new narratives and systems for the future.

  • Google Play will show AI-powered FAQs and recent YouTube videos for games - Google announced a number of new features for Google Play listings for games, including AI-powered FAQs, displaying the latest YouTube videos, new immersive ad formats and support for native PC game publishing.
