  • Google paying some news publishers to publish AI-generated articles - "The experimental tool is being responsibly designed to help small, local publishers produce high quality journalism using factual content from public data sources—like a local government’s public information office or health authority. These tools are not intended to, and cannot, replace the essential role journalists have in reporting, creating and fact-checking their articles."

  • Tumblr and WordPress posts will reportedly be used for OpenAI and Midjourney training - Tumblr and WordPress are reportedly set to strike deals to sell user data to artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Midjourney. The platforms’ parent company, Automattic, is nearing completion of an agreement to provide data to help train the AI companies’ models.

  • Klarna says OpenAI's AI agent does the work of 700 support agents - Swedish payment provider Klarna has announced that its AI assistant, powered by OpenAI, handled 2.3 million conversations in that time, which is reportedly equivalent to the work of 700 full-time employees. Customer satisfaction is on par with human agents, but the error rate in resolving queries has actually declined by 25%. Additionally, customers can now resolve their issues in less than two minutes, compared to eleven minutes previously.

  • Google CEO calls AI tool’s controversial responses ‘completely unacceptable’ - Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the company’s Gemini controversy Tuesday evening, calling the AI app’s problematic responses around race unacceptable and vowing to make structural changes to fix the problem.

  • Apple Shareholders Reject AI Disclosure Proposal - The AFL-CIO asked for a report on the company's use of AI "in its business operations and disclose any ethical guidelines that the company has adopted regarding the company’s use of AI technology." Apple shareholders rejected the measure, saying that disclosures could tip its hand on strategy as it competes against rivals in the fast-moving AI field.

  • OpenAI accuses NYT of hacking ChatGPT to set up copyright suit - OpenAI is claiming that The New York Times "paid someone to hack OpenAI’s products" like ChatGPT to "set up" a lawsuit against them. OpenAi says it allegedly took The Times "tens of thousands of attempts to generate" these supposedly "highly anomalous results" by "targeting and exploiting a bug" that OpenAI claims it is now "committed to addressing."

  • Lightricks' AI movie maker generates entire movies - LTX Studio, a visual AI video tool that can generate characters, scenes, storyboards and even entire movies using only text descriptions. Proponents argue such tools can help democratize the filmmaking process, while some creative professionals worry that generative AI tools will eliminate jobs and hurt the arts.

  • Morph Studio lets you make films using Stability AI-generated clips - Morph Studio, which has its own text-to-video model, just introduced an AI filmmaking platform. The tool takes the form of a storyboard, where users can create and edit shots by entering text prompts for different scenes, and combine them into a cohesive narrative.

  • Adobe reveals a GenAI tool for music - Adobe unveiled Project Music GenAI Control, a platform that can generate audio from text descriptions (e.g. “happy dance,” “sad jazz”) or a reference melody and let users customize the results within the same workflow. Using Project Music GenAI Control, users can adjust things like tempo, intensity, repeating patterns and structure.

  • Women in AI: Miranda Bogen is creating solutions to help govern AI - Miranda Bogen is the founding director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s AI Governance Lab, where she works to help create solutions that can effectively regulate and govern AI systems. She helped guide responsible AI strategies at Meta and previously worked as a senior policy analyst at the organization Upturn, which seeks to advance equity and justice in tech.

  • Anamorph’s generative technology reorders scenes to create unlimited versions of one film - Anamorph, a new filmmaking and technology company founded by filmmaker Gary Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes, wants to reshape the cinematic experience with its proprietary generative technology that can create films that are different every time they’re shown.

  • StarCoder 2 is a code-generating AI that runs on most GPUs - StarCoder, an open source code generator, with a less restrictive license than some of the others out there. Like most other code generators, StarCoder 2 can suggest ways to complete unfinished lines of code as well as summarize and retrieve snippets of code when asked in natural language.

  • SambaNova now offers a bundle of generative AI models - SambaNova, an AI chip startup that’s raised over $1.1 billion in VC money to date, is gunning for OpenAI — and rivals — with a new generative AI product geared toward enterprise customers. Samba-1 is an AI-powered system designed for tasks like text rewriting, coding, language translation and more.

  • Diffusion transformers are the key behind OpenAI’s Sora — and they’re set to upend GenAI - “What transformers contribute to the diffusion process is akin to an engine upgrade,” Xie told TechCrunch in an email interview. “The introduction of transformers … marks a significant leap in scalability and effectiveness.”
