• Expect AI-made prescription drugs to be ready for clinical trials in a couple of years, predicts Google DeepMind CEO - "I would say we're a couple of years away from having the first truly AI-designed drugs for a major disease, cardiovascular, cancer." "We've just signed big deals with Big Pharma and on real drug programs. And I expect in the next couple of years, we'll have AI-designed drugs in the clinic, in clinical testing,"

• Former Twitter engineers are building Particle, an AI-powered news reader - Particle.news, which entered into private beta over the weekend, is a new startup offering a personalized, “multi-perspective” news reading experience that not only leverages AI to summarize the news, but also aims to do so in a way that fairly compensates authors and publishers.

• New AI model could streamline operations in a robotic warehouse - By breaking an intractable problem into smaller chunks, a deep-learning technique identifies the optimal areas for thinning out traffic in a warehouse.

• GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise is now generally available at $39 a month - Copilot Enterprise includes all of the features of the existing Business plan, including IP indemnity, but extends this with a number of crucial features for larger teams. The highlight here is the ability to reference an organization’s internal code and knowledge base.

• Photoroom, the AI image editor, raised $43M at a $500M valuation - Photoroom plans to use the funding to hire more people and to continue investing in its R&D and infrastructure. Photoroom said that it’s currently processing some 5 billion images annually, with its app passing 150 million downloads.

• Writer’s latest models can generate text from images, including charts and graphs - Writer is a San Francisco startup that is working to create generative AI writing products with the enterprise in mind. Today, the company announced a new capability for its Palmyra model that generates text from images, including graphs and charts, they call Palmyra-Vision.

• Mobile OS maker Jolla is back and building an AI device - This device-in-the-making is akin to the personal server concept that’s been kicking around in privacy circles for years — but reconfigured for the generative AI age as a privacy-safe 'adaptive digital assistant'.

• Glean wants to beat ChatGPT at its own game — in the enterprise - Glean was inspired by Jain’s observations that Rubrik employees often struggled to find the information they needed to do their jobs — and that staffers at other companies were struggling with the same. Glean is an AI-powered search app geared toward enterprise customers.

• Inkitt, the self-publishing platform using AI to develop bestsellers, nabs $37M - The startup’s app lets people self-publish stories, and then, using AI and data science, it selects what it believes are the most compelling of these to tweak and subsequently distribute and sell on a second app.

• Former Progressive CMO says new AI platform will disrupt marketing industry - Charney's latest project — an AI platform called MKHSTRY — is designed to spark "lightbulb moments" and drastically reduce the time and money required to brainstorm and launch national campaigns. It could disrupt the $350 billion marketing industry in the same way Uber disrupted transportation.

• AI surge boosts the ambitions of a nuclear startup - X-energy, a startup developing small modular reactors (SMRs), sees an attractive market in slaking the energy thirst of the rapidly unfolding artificial intelligence boom.

• Women in AI: Amba Kak creates policy recommendations to address AI concerns - Amba Kak is the executive director of the AI Now Institute, where she helps create policy recommendations to address AI concerns. She was also a senior AI advisor at the Federal Trade Commission and previously worked as a global policy advisor at Mozilla and a legal advisor to India’s telecom regulator on net-neutrality.
