  • Elon Musk says xAI will open-source Grok this week - Musk, who didn’t elaborate on what all aspects of Grok he planned to open-source, will open-source Grok, days after suing OpenAI and complaining that the Microsoft-backed startup had deviated from its open-source roots.

  • Nvidia is sued by authors over AI use of copyrighted works - Nvidia has been sued by three authors who said it used their copyrighted books without permission to train its NeMo, opens new tab AI platform. Their works were part of a dataset of about 196,640 books that helped train NeMo to simulate ordinary written language, before being taken down in October "due to reported copyright infringement."

  • Pika Labs just added sound effects to its generative AI videos - Now you can make bacon sizzle, lions roar or add footsteps to the video of someone walking down the street. Sounds effects are currently only available to subscribers of the Pro plan or above but will likely be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks.

  • Microsoft boosts safety after internal complaint - Microsoft engineer exposed safety issues with the AI image generation tool, Copilot Designer. Microsoft is patching the tool with blocked prompts, warnings, and improved safety filters.

  • OpenAI announces new members to board of directors - Sue, Nicole and Fidji have experience in leading global organizations and navigating complex regulatory environments, including backgrounds in technology, nonprofit and board governance. They will work closely with current board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers and Bret Taylor as well as Sam and OpenAI’s senior management.

  • OpenAI's Sora faces scrutiny from Italy over data privacy concerns - In a statement, they requested details from OpenAI within 20 days. Specifically, they are interested in how Sora handles user data, particularly personal information.

  • NVIDIA’s shares plummet amid AI chip frenzy - The Nvidia share price has formed a bearish engulfing pattern that often signals a reversal in an uptrend. Wall Street analysts have recently raised concerns over the stock's lofty trading levels, cautioning that the AI market darling may see slowing growth and increasing competition.

  • How the A.I. That Drives ChatGPT Will Move Into the Physical World - Covariant, a robotics start-up, is designing technology that lets robots learn skills much like chatbots do. Its goal is to help robots gain an understanding of what is going on around them and decide what they should do next.

  • The AI arms race between the US and China is heating up - AI leaders from the public and private sectors acknowledged that the US and China currently have the edge. The countries currently rank No. 1 and No. 2 in Tortoise Media's Global AI Index, which measures nations based on AI investment, innovation, and implementation, with Singapore coming in 3rd.

  • Women In AI: Claire Leibowicz, AI and media integrity expert at PAI - Claire Leibowicz is the head of the AI and media integrity program at the Partnership on AI (PAI), the industry group backed by Amazon, Meta, Google, Microsoft and others committed to the “responsible” deployment of AI tech. She also oversees PAI’s AI and media integrity steering committee.

  • Space loves AI, AI doesn’t love Space - Advanced processors are power hungry, meaning satellites with onboard AI require large solar panels and extra batteries. AI-optimized chips are not designed for electronics that “may have to sit on the launch pad in Florida in 100-degree weather for two or three weeks and still work when it gets up to zero atmosphere and minus 40 degrees.”

  • Silicon Valley is pricing academics out of AI research - Fei-Fei Li, the “godmother of artificial intelligence,” is at the forefront of a growing chorus of academics, policymakers and former employees who argue the sky-high cost of working with AI models is boxing researchers out of the field, compromising independent study of the burgeoning technology.

  • What Does the American Public Really Think of AI? - A Stony Brook University study suggests that on average, U.S. adults have gained confidence in the capabilities of AI and grown increasingly opposed to extending human rights to advanced AI systems.

  • SuperAGI snags funding from Jan Koum’s Newlands VC - The startup has ambitions to build a full-stack Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) platform based on Large Agentic Models (LAMs) — seen by some as the next stage in development for Large Language Models.
