  • Bezos, Nvidia join OpenAI in funding humanoid robot startup - Big tech names are investing in startup Figure AI that develops human-like robots. Figure AI is raising about $675 million in a funding round that carries a pre-money valuation of about $2 billion, according to the report.

  • Perplexity Partners with ElevenLabs to launch 'Discover Daily' Podcast - Perplexity announced a partnership with ElevenLabs, introducing a daily podcast narrated by the startup’s AI-generated voices to bring the latest headlines in innovation, science, and culture to listeners everywhere.

  • Nvidia Announces GEAR - Nvidia researcher Dr. Jim Fan announced he is co-founding a new research group named GEAR, aimed at building AI foundation agents spanning multimodal LLMs, general purpose robots, and more. Their mission is to build foundation models for embodied agents in virtual and physical worlds.

  • Humane pushes Ai Pin ship date to mid-April - The device is the first prominent example of what’s likely to be a growing trend in the consumer hardware world, as more startups look to harness the white-hot world of generative AI for new form factors. Humane is positioning its product as the next step for a space that’s been stuck on the smartphone form factor for more than a decade.

  • Democratic consultant admits to commissioning fake Biden robocall that used AI - Steve Kramer, a veteran political consultant working for a rival candidate, acknowledged Sunday that he created the fake Joe Biden robocall at the center of a multistate investigation after NBC News reported about his involvement. He claimed he did it as an act of civil disobedience to call attention to the dangers of AI in politics.

  • Microsoft shifts AI focus off Sam Altman - Microsoft launched its AI principles Monday, signaling years of major investments to come and a determination to spread its AI bets. It will codify how the company will pursue a "broad array of AI partnerships" beyond its $13 billion investment in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.

  • China’s Oppo unveils prototype augmented reality glasses with voice assistant as AI hype hits gadgets - The Air Glass 3 needs to be tethered to an Oppo smartphone. Users can control the glasses with touch sensors on the side of the frame.

  • Google hopeful of fix for Gemini’s historical-image diversity issue within weeks - “We care, of course, about historical accuracy. And so we’ve taken that feature offline while we fix that and we hope to have that back online in the next — in very short order. Next couple of weeks, next few weeks.”

  • Mistral AI releases new model to rival GPT-4 and its own chat assistant - The company is launching a new flagship large language model called Mistral Large. When it comes to reasoning capabilities, it is designed to rival other top-tier models, such as GPT-4 and Claude 2. In addition to Mistral Large, the startup is also launching its own alternative to ChatGPT with a new service called Le Chat.

  • Darwin AI gives small LatAm companies AI-powered sales assistant - Darwin AI, a Brazil-based AI startup, is developing a conversational AI assistant for small businesses across Latin America who want to get into AI, but don’t have an IT staff. Should the conversation escalate, either negatively or become a sales lead, it will bring in a human to continue the conversation.

  • FlowGPT is the wild west of GenAI apps - FlowGPT, aims to be a sort of “app store” for GenAI models like Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, Meta’s Llama 2 and OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 as well as front-end experiences for those models (think text fields and prompt suggestions). Through FlowGPT, users can build their own GenAI-powered apps and make them publicly available, earning tips for their contributions.

  • Women in AI: Mutale Nkonde’s nonprofit is working to make AI less biased - Mutale Nkonde is the founding CEO of the nonprofit AI for the People (AFP), which seeks to increase the amount of Black voices in tech. Before this, she helped introduce the Algorithmic and Deep Fakes Algorithmic Acts, in addition to the No Biometric Barriers to Housing Act, to the U.S. House of Representatives. She is currently a Visiting Policy Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute.

  • Treating a chatbot nicely might boost its performance — here’s why - People are more likely to do something if you ask nicely. But do generative AI models behave the same way? ‘Being nicer’ implies articulating your requests in a way that aligns with the compliance pattern the models were trained on, which can increase their likelihood of delivering the desired output. The feature involves a clever “pinching” gesture that shows a neatly formatted summary with main points.

  • There's a power struggle brewing over crypto and AI — literally - Both technologies demand electricity-thirsty computing at a time when the world is already failing to steeply cut emissions. An International Energy Agency report last month estimates that data centers, crypto and AI accounted for roughly 2% of global power demand in 2022 — and that could double by 2026.

  • Startup uses AI to develop vaccines for future pandemics - Baseimmune, a British startup that uses AI to develop vaccines for future pathogen mutations, raised £9 million in venture capital funding. Lots of the AI chatter right now is "what comes after chatbots," and the most likely (and consequential) answers are in biotech.
